Godiva - " Gift of God "  

Godiva was latinised from of the English word Godgifu or Godgyfu, Princess Godiva appears in the history of Ely Abbey , the liber Eliensis at the end of the 12th century. In the 11th century Princess Godiva and her husband leofric lived in Conventry, England. Her husband was a powerfull ruler who  was unsympathetic to the citizens of kingdome. Princess Godiva was a woman of great generosity who had dedication her life to the impoverished and stricken.

When Lord Leofric imposed a heavey burdan of taxation on the citizens,who were suffering grievously under her husband's oppressive taxation.Princess Godiva took pity on the people of Coventry.  PrincessGodiva appealed again and again to her husband, who obstinately refused to remit the tolls.

At last, weary of her entreaties, Lord Leofric set forth this challaenge: If Princess Godiva rode naked through the streets, the taxation would be lifted. Princess Godiva was not a modest woman but she immediatlely accepted to this challanged to help her fellow townspeople.

On the morning of the event, dawn rose, the bells chimed and Princess Godiva began her ride wrapped in the nothing but her lustrous long hair. The generosity of lady Godiva led to more generosity on the part of the townspeople. The people agreed to all close their shutters to preserve Princess Godiva's modesty.  Throughout the street, the sounds of hooves echoed, but not a single glance fell upon Princess Godiva.

After her finish, thundrous cheers erupted throughout the town, Princess Godiva,s bravery and risk had won over the hearts of all who knew her. As promised, Lord Leofric eased his taxation of the poor and Princess Godiva's place in history was immortailized.
